Happy New Year!

Well, 2013 is in the bag, and it was quite the year for my family and for me.

Things started off badly in January as my wife, Kristy, battled metastatic breast cancer. She went through a round of radiation treatments to her spine that nearly killed her, but she fought through it and began to improve in March and April. In the meantime, her doctor at Vanderbilt put her on a medication regimen that stabilized her blood counts, which had gotten dangerously low. She has done remarkably well and we had a truly special holiday season together.

Back in February, because Kristy was having so much difficulty, our daughter, Kody, moved back home from Knoxville to help Kristy with the dance school. Kody grew up at the school - she took dance from the time she could walk - but she had gone off to college at the University of Tennessee, had graduated, and had gotten a job working for the city of Knoxville. When she came back to the dance school, it was though she had never left. She pitched right in, and by the end of the year (the dance year ends in May) she was practically running the place. She has decided to stay on, thank goodness, and she and Kristy are like a couple of clones. Things are good at The Dance Company, which is what Kristy calls her school. Kody also illustrated a children's book called "There's an Elephant Standing in There" that I wrote a while back, and it turned out beautifully. We're having it formatted now and will put it on the market some time in the next few weeks. I can't wait to see how it does

My son, Dylan, and I formed a corporation called Phoenix Flying, Inc., early in the year and began publishing my books through the company. Dylan had graduated from college a year earlier with a degree in business management and marketing and was working at Verizon. We made him president of the corporation, and in June he left his job and began working with me full time. It was a good decision. Working together, he and I managed to sell more than a quarter of a million ebooks in 2013. We also sold more than a thousand print books and almost two thousand audio books. The money is great, but the feeling of accomplishment is better, as is the satisfaction of being able to work with someone I love, trust and respect. Dylan has since published another writer - a young lady named Rebecca Harris - and will pick up a few more this year, I'm sure. I don't know which direction my career will end up going, although I have no doubt it is going to get better and better. There are people from New York interested in my work now that I've laid a solid foundation and gained a solid following. I can't say much about it right now, but it's all good. We'll see what happens.

In May, Kody's boyfriend, a young man named Andy Rowe, moved back here from Knoxville. He proposed to Kody in July, and then, in October, he got himself admitted to medical school at the Quillen College of Medicine in Johnson City. They were married on December 20th in a beautiful ceremony and then we threw a heck of a party at the Johnson City Country Club for three hundred of our family members and friends. It was a truly beautiful thing, and I'll never forget it.

The day after Kody was married, on December 21, I ate lunch with a group of family at Cheddar's in Johnson City. I left my phone in the car, which is my habit. When I got back to the car, there was a text from my brother telling me that my mother, Shirley Pratt, had died. She had been battling metastatic breast cancer (the same thing Kristy is fighting) for more than a year. I knew the time was near, but it was still a shock. I'm sure my mother is resting in peace. She had come to terms with God, and I can honestly say that I never heard her utter a cross word to another human being. Not even to me, and Lord knows I deserved it more than once.

The year we had is a reminder of something I've learned as time has gone by. Life is going to happen whether you like it or not. Sometimes life happens good, and sometimes life happens bad. You might as well learn to live it.

It sounds like you had quite a year Scott.. glad Kristy is keeping up her spirits.. that and the support of a loving good family is the most important element for keeping ones spirits up and beating the adversities that arrise in life. I know that you are feeling very blessed when you see the sucess of your kids for (I know as I have two girls that ones joy is to see them go to college and get advanced degrees and to remain a close and caring family that is loving and good). I will keep you all in my daily prayers that the LORD may watch over you all year and bring Kristy good health.. May this be a great year for you.. please advise me when the illustrated children's book comes out I will get it for my grandson and tell my friends to do the same.. Take care thanks for the blog... Beautifully written Scott. I do hope that 2014 is a great year for you and your family. It so nice to hear of families working together to brighten the futures of our offspring. You and Kristy have obviously done an amazing job in keeping your family as close as your mother did for you and your siblings. Many blessings to you and yours.

I have only read the first three of your books, and already I am a fan. Quit your day jobs and write. I am so thrilled to find books that don't have a bunch of foul language, aren't loaded with sex, and a main character who loves and is faithful to his wife. The stories are well written, don't drag, and keep me interested. I am an avid reader and give your books a full 6 stars!

Read the collection of 1-5 in the joe serious and I know I have found me a new favourite author. I guessed by the knowledgable way you wrote about breast cancer that someone close to you suffered with this horrible disease. I hope in the next book I get to read that CArline has beaten it as I hope your wife has. Love the parrallel to you own family. Bet you even have the dogs.

I'm a fan of your books and I'm also a breast cancer survivor. As I was reading your novel about Caroline having breast cancer, I knew instantly that you had lived through something similar. I googled you and found out that (unfortunately) I was right. Just wanted to say that you are not alone and that I'm praying for you and your wife.

Sir, as a former member of the elite 2nd Ranger Battalion, and a retired federal agent, I find your books well written, factually sound, and highly entertaining! I've read them all, and wait eagerly for your next offering. How refreshing to find an author who's work is contemporaneous, without salacious sex and unfaithfulness portrayed as acceptable characteristics of the protagonist. Thank you for sharing your life storytelling your books. Regards to your wonderful family, enjoy it their company.

I have recently started your Joe Dillard series, just finished the 4th one. I am truly enjoying your books! As others have said, I am grateful for the lack of gratuitous sex that seems to plague most writing these days. I thrilled that you've included a strong family bond and faithfulness, love and longevity of marriage, with all the complications they entail. The stories are compelling to the point that I will even listen to the Kindle Text-to-Speech option when my hands aren't free! I look forward to continuing the series. Thanks!

Just finished book #8 Judgement Cometh (and right soon). I enjoyed it very much. I live in Middle TN about 50 miles SE of Nashville and really like your Joe Dillard novels about justice and injustice in places I know about personally. I might add that I know personally of some of the scandals involving locals on up to and including the past Governors. I have known some of the local sheriffs who resemble Sheriff Leon in the pursuit of criminals. Keep on writing and I'll keep on reading!

Finished book 8 in Joe Dilliard series about a week ago. I already miss Joe, Kristy and Leon! Please keep the series going. Also read River of Fire and loved it. Wishing you and your family all the best of life.

Scott, I just love your books! I have binge-read the entire Joe Dillard series and am sorry there isn't another. DO keep writing! But, please, could you let my favorite characters, Joe and Leon, recover their moral compasses? I don't care for explicit violence in general but when it's committed by two people I have grown to love and respect, it's hard to read. They each seemed to change in #8. The Bates interrogation scene truly shocked me. As a breast cancer survivor, I could tell you had lived it. I wish your wife continued health.

Scott! Love the series and really really hope you have more coming! Im not sure why Amazon or you offer them for FREE! They are certainly worth every penny other authors charge! If there is a way to pay for the copies I got for FREE, please advise: YES: I will pay!

Hello, I'm beginning your series which I happily stumbled upon today. I always get a charge when I find a 'local' author! (I live in Grundy, Va). I think it's wonderful that you've chosen your area as your location base for book one. I'm really enjoying it thus far and was happy to learn that it's part of a series! Your writing brings joy to people's lives. What a great way to escape the real world for a bit! Thank you for sharing your gift. I hope this holiday season finds your family well.

I'm thrilled that you make your books available to Kindle readers. I have severely arthritic hands. I know you might lose a couple dollars doing so but you make thousands of readers very happy. Best of health to you all and thousands of happy tomorrows. From my heart.

I stumbled upon your name on Amazon. I am an avid reader and since we don't have a book store here anymore, Amazon gets all my money. My one and only child, a son, is named Scott Pratt. I thought perhaps he had been holding out on me. I ordered your first book, and it took me a while to get into it, then it got me. I have now ordered all of your books and am settling down each night to my 30 minutes of reading. I do hope your wife is doing well. Cancer is such a nasty disease. I have lots of relatives back there in Tennessee where you are. Beautiful country. Keep the books coming.

Scott, no wonder you write with such authenticity about metastatic CA. You and your family are literally "in the trenches" with this bastard (can I say this????) Anyway, we all know you're the REAL DEAL about lawyer "stuff". How greatly we love Joe Dillard.........the intrepid seek-and-destroy lawyer!! :-0

My neighbor introduced me to your books and I am so hooked!! As a former law enforcement officer and paralegal, I appreciate the accuracy in the Joe Dillard series. Unfortunately, I am about to finish book 8 and will be sorry since there is no book 9 out yet. Please, please keep this series going. It is wonderful. I feel like I personally know all the characters and that they are real. This is the best series of books I have ever read and I've read a lot of series including those by Robyn Carr, Debbie Macomber and others but yours is the best. Keep up the good work and thank you for my most enjoyable reading times.

As many of your readers, I first read the Joe Dillard Series! I just completed the last one today! I'm a little disappointed that I've completed book #8 and there's not another one......yet. The description of you can't put it down is a great description.
You certainly hold the readers' interest and curiosity! God Bless you and your family! I will certainly keep your family and Kristi in my prayers!!!
A new and Avid fan!!! Take Care!

Thank you for the Joe Dillard series. I love your style of writing and I knew as soon as Caroline got breast cancer that you had been through this. My mother was Caroline and she died of breast cancer in 1996. I have walked the Susan G. Komen 60 mile walk in her name since then. I am looking forward to more books by you and I so appreciate your story, written so close to your heart.

Your Joe Dillard series has restored my faith in reading books that I cannot put down. I have lived in or are familiar with most of the areas of Tennessee that you describe so well, and the characters you have fleshed out are reminiscent of those I have known all my life. I look forward to reading more of your work.

I just started reading your Dillard series! i am now on book 3 and can't put it down. You will need to write faster if I continue reading your books at this pace!😀 Your style, character development and pacing is excellent. Not boring at all. I teach Crim Law at a community college and I can use some of your examples in class! Great stuff!

I've read every one of the series. BUT, it has been a good many years with nothing coming. Did you quit? You are alive? When will we see something new about my favorite attorney (I'm an 83 yr. old retired attorney and college professor). I plan to last a while, but if you aren't going to write anymore let us know the magic is over, ENE THE SUSPENSE!

Scott! I am a new comer to the Joe Dillard series. I am addicted, best reading I have come across in a long time. With three kids, my attention is always else where, until now! Thank you!
I have to ask, was "Injustice for All" based on the 1997 Kentucky slayings of the Lillelid family? I watch Investigative ID on TV and they recreated the crime scene with interviews with Natasha's mother, etc. I was blown away that I somewhat knew the crime already when I made the connection! Anyway, thanks again for such enjoyable reading!

Read all 8 Joe Dillard books in four days. Could not get enough. I really enjoyed the Joe Dillard composite and thought that the anguish of having a loved one go through chemo made him very believable.
I was very saddened to find that you and your wife have been on this journey. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

I'm a HUGE Joe Dillard fan and am anxiously waiting and hoping for book 9 to come out. I don't know the status of your wife's health today, but I pray for her healing and hope she is still dancing. Thank you for the many hours of enjoyment the reading of your books has brought to my life. Keep 'em coming!!

I really enjoy your books, and your writing. It is not very often that I find the writing is just as good as the story, but your books are not just very easy to read, they are a lesson in how to use the English language. You are relatively new to me, but I plan on reading all of your books. Exciting and well written!

I just found out about Kristy and my heart aches for all of you! I've been rooting for Kristy via 'Caroline Dillard' and just learned of your loss. Thank you, Scott, for sharing Kristy's vibrant spirit in your novels! It has been a privilege to get a sense of her dynamic persona as well as your love and adoration of her through your writing. I celebrate the love & laughter! As great as the delight and humor you have brought to my soul, the sadness and sorrow I feel for Kristy's passing is deeper yet. Hugs and Love to you and your family as you find a way to just take the next breath and the next step as each day passes. Laugh when you can - cry when you have to. With a grateful and heavy heart, Kathryn
